Saffie Osborne has made history by becoming the first female jockey to win a British Classic Flat race. The 24-year-old rode Highwayman to victory in the St Leger at Doncaster, the world's oldest Classic Flat race, which was celebrating its 250th anniversary.
Osborne, on the 11-1 chance Highwayman, pulled clear in the closing stages of the race. The win also secured a one-two for trainer Joseph O'Brien, whose colt Enceladus finished second.
Aidan O'Brien, who was aiming for a fourth consecutive St Leger win, saw his horse Amelia Earhart finish third. Pre-race favourite Christmas Day, also trained by Aidan O'Brien, finished ninth.
Speaking after the race, Osborne thanked Joseph O'Brien, stating, "I have to thank Joseph and his team for putting their faith in me. It won't change Joseph's life, but it's changed mine."
