Sainsbury's Taste the Difference albacore tuna steak in spring water has been rated as the best overall supermarket tuna in a recent taste test. The product received a four-star rating, described as a classic, pale albacore tuna with well-formed, large, flaky steaks, and a sweet aroma and taste.
The taste test also highlighted Co-op responsibly sourced tuna chunks in brine as the best bargain, earning three stars. These skipjack steaks were noted for their sweet aroma and taste, and firm texture, and were caught by pole and line in the Pacific.
Other brands reviewed included Ocado, Waitrose No 1, Lidl Nixe, John West, Tesco, Asda, Minerva, and Morrisons. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Good Fish Guide, which rates seafood sustainability using a traffic-light system, was referenced, noting that both skipjack and albacore have green-rated options available.
Sustainability considerations, such as catch method and region, were also discussed. Pole and line fishing is rated as the best catch method by the Good Fish Guide, which also recommends fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
