Sainsbury's is set to launch a new "Modern Work Experience Programme" in October, aiming to provide around 10,000 work experience and skills opportunities for young people across the UK over the next year. The initiative is designed to help young people gain experience, build confidence, and prepare for employment.
The programme will focus on communities where young people may struggle to access employer networks and career opportunities, including schools with higher levels of free school meal uptake. It follows recent education reforms announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, which aim to bridge the gap between education and the workplace.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that tackling youth unemployment is a national priority, while Sainsbury's Chief Executive Simon Roberts emphasised the company's commitment to helping young people enter the career ladder. The opportunities will include workplace visits, careers sessions, practical work experience, and support with CVs, interviews, and applications.
