Sainsbury's is expected to provide an update on its latest numbers this week. However, the City's primary focus remains on the supermarket's recent merger talks with Morrisons.
Sainsbury's boss Simon Roberts is anticipated to face questions regarding the supermarket's decision to end discussions with Morrisons and whether future talks are ruled out. The supermarket reportedly decided to end discussions in February this year following a disagreement over price.
Industry experts suggest a potential merger with Morrisons could have supported Roberts' focus on food, particularly given Morrisons' in-house manufacturing arm, Myton Food Group. Retail Economics analyst Nicholas Found stated that acquiring Morrisons would deliver an "immediate leap in scale, strengthen its food manufacturing capabilities and expand its convenience footprint – narrowing the gap with Tesco."
Sainsbury's has recently divested from non-core operations, selling Argos to Swift Partners for £120m in July this year. The grocer also withdrew from its cafe operations, closing all in-store outlets in January last year, resulting in over 3,000 job losses.
