The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared a national outbreak of salmonella food poisoning following one death and hundreds of illnesses. Imported eggs or products containing them are the leading suspects for the cause, though this is not yet proven.

Evidence suggests people contracted the bug while eating out, with catering and food services such as restaurants or cafes likely playing a role. The majority of cases, 199 out of 207, have been in England, including 47 in London and 38 in Yorkshire and Humber. There have also been six cases in Scotland, one in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland.

Genetic testing of the bacteria shows similarities with a previous outbreak involving imported eggs. The UKHSA states there is currently no identified link to UK-produced eggs or poultry. Health experts are still working to confirm eggs as the source and to track their origin to limit further infections.

What this means for you: Thoroughly cooking eggs and other food can prevent infection. Washing hands before preparing food, after using the bathroom, and after contact with animals can also help protect you. Infants, young children, pregnant individuals, and older adults should only eat runny or raw eggs if they have a British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain egg assurance scheme.
