It was a night to remember for Sam Kerr as she made her highly-anticipated return to Gotham FC in style – or rather, under the lights of Citi Field! The electric atmosphere was palpable as over 42,000 fans crammed into the usually baseball-friendly stadium, sending a resounding message that women's sport is here to stay. And what a spectacle it was – with Kerr playing her part in a historic 1-0 win for Gotham against Washington Spirit in the NWSL.
The Aussie superstar received a rapturous reception as she came on as a second-half sub, no doubt feeling right at home among the sea of Gotham fans who had packed out Citi Field. "In many ways this is like a full circle moment with Sam Kerr coming here and being able to experience this on her first night," beamed NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman – and what an introduction it was! American midfielder Rose Lavelle scored the decisive goal in the first half, setting the tone for a thrilling contest.
This record-breaking attendance is a significant milestone for Gotham FC, eclipsing their previous best of 15,560 by a whopping 27,155. While this is a landmark moment for New York, it's worth noting that Denver Summit still holds the all-time NWSL record with an incredible 63,000 spectators watching them take on the Spirit in March. But what's truly exciting is the boost this gives Gotham FC as they prepare to relocate from Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey to Etihad Park in Queens – a move that promises to bring the team closer to their fan base.
Commissioner Berman was effusive in her praise, stating "We know that with investment, if you build it, they will come. And this is a proof point for that." She added, with infectious enthusiasm: "My favourite thing about tonight is that it isn't transactional. It's not a one and done. This is the beginning of a new relationship for this team in Queens."
The turnout was all the more impressive given the challenging conditions – a thick layer of smoke hung over the stadium, courtesy of recent wildfires in Ontario, Canada. Organisers are optimistic that the air will clear by Sunday, when the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina is set to take place at New York New Jersey Stadium. Fingers crossed for a crisp, clear day for what promises to be an electric showdown!
