New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who became a household name following his leading role in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78. While the film cemented his international fame, Neill had already built a substantial career over 15 years, featuring in diverse projects from the New Zealand thriller Sleeping Dogs (1977) to the critically acclaimed The Piano (1993).
Spielberg reportedly sought a 'good, solid actor' who wouldn't demand a high fee for Jurassic Park, having already allocated a significant portion of the budget to groundbreaking dinosaur effects. After A-list stars like Harrison Ford and William Hurt reportedly turned down the role of the irritable palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant, Neill, who had recently become available, was chosen. His ability to portray both gentlemanly charm and stern authority, honed in films such as My Brilliant Career (1979) and The Hunt for Red October (1990), proved ideal for the role. His initial reaction shot to seeing a live dinosaur, transitioning from grizzled exterior to childlike awe, is widely regarded as one of the film's most iconic moments.
Despite the film's monumental success, grossing over $1.058 billion (£789.47 million) worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of its time, Neill often reflected on one particular challenge: his accent. Spielberg initially asked him to adopt an American accent, only to reverse the decision on the first day of filming, instructing him to use his natural New Zealand voice. Days later, the director reportedly suggested a compromise, leaving Neill in an 'actor's nightmare' of vocal uncertainty.
The actor also carried a lasting physical reminder from the set. He sustained a significant scar on his left hand during a scene where his character used a flare to distract a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The incident involved burning phosphorus dropping onto his hand, beneath his watch, leaving a permanent mark. Furthermore, Neill recounted a narrow escape during production when a hurricane struck the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where the film was being shot, forcing the cast and crew to seek shelter.
Jurassic Park is widely available to stream in the UK on platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Sky Cinema, often requiring a subscription. Its enduring popularity continues to be recognised, with the film frequently appearing in 'best of' lists and its innovative special effects still admired over three decades later. Neill's performance as Dr Grant remains a defining element of the science fiction classic, which received numerous accolades including three Academy Awards for its technical achievements.
