Viral claims on social media suggest saunas pose a serious threat to male fertility, but reproductive health experts say the reality is far more complex than these alarming headlines suggest.
Professor Colin Duncan, a fertility specialist at the University of Edinburgh, explains that whilst the testicles are indeed temperature-sensitive organs where sperm are produced, occasional sauna use typically has no noticeable impact on sperm count in men with healthy fertility levels. "The human body has evolved sophisticated temperature regulation mechanisms," he notes, including the cremaster muscle which naturally adjusts testicular position to maintain optimal conditions.
The key distinction lies in individual circumstances. Men with already low sperm counts may experience some additional impact from frequent or prolonged heat exposure, but this represents an exacerbation of existing issues rather than a primary cause of fertility problems. For the majority of men with normal sperm production, occasional sauna sessions are unlikely to affect their reproductive capacity.
These online concerns often stem from misunderstanding how sperm production and temperature regulation actually work. Whilst extreme, sustained heat can indeed harm sperm viability, the intermittent exposure during typical sauna use falls well short of causing significant or lasting damage to fertility in healthy individuals. Medical professionals caution against drawing sweeping conclusions from anecdotal reports or oversimplified explanations circulating on social platforms.
The NHS recommends that couples trying to conceive, or anyone with fertility concerns, should seek proper medical advice rather than relying on unverified online claims. A comprehensive assessment from your GP or a fertility specialist can provide accurate, personalised guidance based on your individual health circumstances and needs.
