The decision to withdraw came after a woman accused Platner of sexual assault, an allegation he denies. This, coupled with other accusations of disturbing behaviour and offensive social media posts, proved insurmountable for his insurgent campaign, which had commenced 323 days earlier with a polished video showcasing his connection to 'hardscrabble' Maine folk. In contrast, his farewell video was reportedly recorded vertically outside his home, with close advisers present, including Ben Chin and Morris Katz.
Sources close to the campaign, as reported by Politico, indicated that Platner's advisers had pleaded with him to adopt a 'conciliatory' tone in his announcement.
