A free initiative to swap school uniforms, established four years ago by Jon from Cardiff, has expanded to include over 200 schools. The scheme, which began with a plastic collection box outside Jon's home, now operates a website and has facilitated the exchange of 8,000 items.
Jon, who started the scheme at Ysgol Treganna in Cardiff in 2022, stated that the website, launched in March, has the potential to save Welsh families more than £50m a year in total. UK government figures indicate the average annual cost of a primary school uniform is about £343, rising to £442 for a comprehensive pupil.
The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on families and promote sustainability. Kingsbury High School in London, with 2,000 pupils, is among the schools involved. Tara Randall, the school's sustainability lead, noted that the scheme also helps to normalise swapping school clothes and removes the stigma associated with seeking help for clothing children.
Research by Save the Children and the Baby Bank Alliance network suggests that almost half of parents are worried about the cost of school uniforms.
