Schools are seeking government guidance on the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) by pupils and teachers, according to a new report. Sir Anthony Seldon, a former head teacher and author on AI in education, co-authored the report which describes the introduction of AI as "chaotic and anarchic".
The report recommends that the government implement a national framework for AI adoption in education across England. This framework should include training for teachers and require schools to develop their own "AI strategies" by September next year.
Among its 10-point plan, the report suggests the Prime Minister deliver a speech on aligning education with real-world AI use, and that Ofsted assess schools' AI strategy implementation. It also proposes a mass information campaign on AI's opportunities and risks, and reforming assessments to include continuous evaluation using AI.
The Department for Education acknowledges the "significant opportunities and challenges" of AI. A spokesperson stated that ministers are refreshing the curriculum in England, developing new AI tutoring tools, and introducing vocational routes for careers.
