Science Corporation, a start-up focused on brain-computer interfaces, has achieved a significant milestone by gaining approval from Europe’s medical device regulator for its vision-restoring chip. The device, named PRIMA, is designed to treat vision loss caused by age-related macular degeneration, a condition that affects millions globally by damaging the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye, impairing reading and face recognition.
The PRIMA device involves a small chip being implanted at the back of a patient's eye during an hour-long outpatient procedure. Patients then wear specially designed glasses equipped with cameras, which transmit images of the world to the implanted chip, effectively restoring functional vision. Science Corporation's CEO, Max Hodak, highlighted the device's efficacy, citing examples of patients reading novels, drawing, and engaging in activities like crossword puzzles and Sudoku.
Hodak, a co-founder and former president of Neuralink, established Science Corporation in 2021 with an ambition to develop advanced bio-hybrid brain-computer interfaces. However, the immediate focus is on building a sustainable business through solutions like PRIMA. The company acquired French firm Pixium, the developer of the PRIMA technology, in 2024 to accelerate its regulatory and commercialisation efforts.
While the cost of each PRIMA device is anticipated to be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds, Science Corporation and its European medical partners are actively engaging with healthcare providers to discuss reimbursement strategies. The company is currently preparing to launch PRIMA in Germany, where its clinical trials were conducted, with the first procedures potentially taking place as early as September.
Looking ahead, Science Corporation plans to enhance PRIMA's vision capabilities through new chip designs and more compact glasses, aiming for a form factor similar to advanced augmented reality glasses, despite the significant power and computing demands. The company is also collaborating with Dr. Murat Günel of Yale Medical School on developing procedures for human trials of a directly implanted bio-hybrid brain sensor, underscoring its long-term commitment to pioneering neurotechnology.
The European approval marks a critical step for Science Corporation, providing a commercial foundation to fund its more ambitious research into bio-hybrid technologies. Hodak emphasised that establishing a successful vision business is paramount, as it generates the revenue necessary to finance future innovations and provides a clear path for investor confidence and financial planning.
