Scientists believe they may be a step closer to detecting dark matter, a mysterious substance that physicists have been studying for decades. Dark matter is thought to make up 85% of the matter in the universe.
The substance has previously been known primarily through observations of its gravitational effects on other things, as it cannot be seen or detected directly. If confirmed, this finding could significantly change the understanding of the universe, according to science editor Ian Sample.
Dr Samuel Erikson, a senior research associate at the University of Bristol and first author of the research paper, has discussed the reception of this finding within the physics community.
