Netball fever gripped The Hydro in Glasgow yesterday as Scotland's brave battlers secured a thrilling 56-47 victory over their Welsh counterparts in their inaugural Commonwealth Games match. The all-British showdown saw the hosts bounce back from their opening defeat to New Zealand with a performance that will be remembered for years to come.
The Thistles were on fire from the get-go, storming into an impressive 16-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, leaving Wales reeling. But the Dragons' squad refused to give up, mounting a spirited comeback in the second period that narrowed the deficit to just two goals at one point. However, Scotland's stars dug deep, and by half-time they were sitting pretty with a 28-21 advantage.
Scotland's shooting ace Emma Barrie proved to be the difference-maker, unleashing a devastating display of long-range prowess that left Wales struggling to keep up. And Niamh McCall, the Scotland goal attack who plays alongside nine of her Welsh teammates at Superleague side Dragons, was a constant thorn in Wales' side with her pinpoint shooting.
Wales struggled to contain their own momentum, racking up an unfortunate accumulation of contact penalties throughout the match. Despite their best efforts to close the gap in the latter quarters, Scotland held firm to secure a resounding win.
"I'm absolutely ecstatic," beamed Scotland's Niamh McCall after the victory. "This was one we were targeting, and to double down on that result against a team ranked higher than us is just fantastic. We're thrilled with the win today."
McCall also praised the electrifying home support, saying, "The crowd are like our eighth player out there – they give us so much energy. The louder they can be, the better we perform, and it was phenomenal today."
Meanwhile, Wales captain Bethan Dyke expressed her disappointment at their sluggish start. "We're bitterly disappointed with that first quarter," she admitted. "But we fought back in those other three quarters – just not good enough in that opening period." Despite the setback, Dyke remained optimistic about the competition ahead, saying, "There's still plenty to play for here, and we can't let this result define our tournament."
Scotland will look to keep their momentum going when they face Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night. Wales will also take on the same opponents on Tuesday in a bid to secure their first win of the Games in Glasgow.
