A nightmare debut for Scotland's Angus Gunn as he was left battered and bruised by a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Orlando City. The San Jose Earthquakes shot-stopper, who made his MLS bow, couldn't stem the tide as Bruce Arena's side were torn apart in front of their home fans.
The usually reliable Gunn was no match for the visitors' clinical finishing, with David Brekalo's header and Ivan Angulo's low drive leaving him little chance. The turning point came when France legend Antoine Griezmann netted three minutes into the second half – a goal that left Gunn exposed as Orlando City poured on the pressure.
Despite being on the receiving end of a hammering, San Jose goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was in top form, making several key saves to deny Timo Werner a scoring debut for the hosts. The Canadian's heroics were all in vain, however, as Braian Ojeda sealed the rout with 17 minutes remaining.
San Jose's position at the top of the Western Conference remains strong – albeit on goal difference behind Vancouver Whitecaps who have a game in hand. In MLS standings, Nashville hold top spot ahead of Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.
Gunn and his San Jose teammates will look to put this dismal performance behind them when they host LA Galaxy on Sunday, a match that could be just the tonic to get their campaign back on track.
