Five Scottish Premiership clubs have confirmed the postponement of their league matches originally scheduled for Saturday, 22 August, as they prioritise their European play-off commitments. The affected teams – Celtic, Rangers, Heart of Midlothian, Motherwell, and Hibernian – are all involved in the critical two-legged qualifying play-offs for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, which span the weekend of their domestic fixtures.
This move is facilitated by a rule change implemented in April 2025, which grants clubs competing in Europe the autonomy to unilaterally delay a league game, a departure from the previous requirement for mutual agreement between both clubs. Premiership champions Celtic are confirmed for the Champions League play-offs, aiming to avoid a repeat of last season's defeat at this stage to Kazakh side Kairat Almaty. Rangers are also guaranteed a play-off spot, though their specific competition, either the Europa League or Conference League, is yet to be determined.
For Heart of Midlothian, their participation in a play-off round appears highly likely. They currently trail Sturm Graz 4-0 on aggregate in their Champions League second-round qualifying tie, which would see them drop into the Europa League third qualifying round. Rangers have already been drawn against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok at this stage. Hearts could only avoid a play-off if they manage to overturn the deficit against Sturm Graz and then lose in the Champions League third qualifying round, which would grant them direct entry into the Europa League league phase.
Motherwell and Hibernian's Premiership postponements hinge on their success in their ongoing Conference League second-round qualifying ties. Motherwell holds a strong position, leading Faroese side HB 2-0 on aggregate. In contrast, Hibernian faces an uphill battle, having lost their first leg 2-0 against Kosovan outfit Malisheva. Should these two clubs progress, their respective matches against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock on 22 August will also be postponed.
The rearranged Premiership fixtures are expected to take place during midweek slots, specifically on either 8/9 September or 15/16 September, providing the clubs with crucial breathing room to manage their demanding European schedules. The only Premiership fixture on 22 August confirmed to go ahead as scheduled is Dundee United v Dundee, as neither team is involved in European competition.
