One setup involved a Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine SE (UDM-SE) router configured for WAN failover. T-Mobile's 5G internet service was set as the primary connection, with Starlink as the backup. This configuration aimed to mitigate issues like dropped connections, which occurred with both 5G and Starlink when used individually.
The system successfully managed at least a dozen dropped connections from the primary T-Mobile 5G service over two months. The UDM-SE's rapid failover to Starlink meant that users did not experience dropped calls, buffering video, or timed-out web pages during these outages.
