A large-scale search operation for a teenage kayaker who went missing off the Northumberland coast has been called off. Michael Henry, aged 19, is now believed to have died at sea after his craft overturned near Boulmer. Emergency services were initially alerted to the incident shortly after 9:15 PM BST on Tuesday, 7 July, following reports of two men in the water.
One of the individuals involved managed to swim to a nearby buoy, where he was successfully rescued by the coastguard. However, a comprehensive search was immediately launched for Michael Henry, who hails from the Rothbury area. Despite extensive efforts by various emergency services, including sea and coastal patrols, Michael could not be located.
Northumbria Police's Chief Inspector Jon Caisley confirmed the difficult news, stating, "Despite extensive searches at sea and on the coast, we have been unable to find Michael and he is sadly believed to have died at sea." Ch Insp Caisley acknowledged the profound impact this outcome would have on Michael's family and the wider community.
In a heartfelt tribute, Michael's family expressed their gratitude to the emergency services and members of the public for their unwavering support and search endeavours. They described Michael as a "keen sportsman who loved the outdoors" and shared that he had been preparing for a summer of travelling before intending to start university in the upcoming academic year. The family added, "We would like to thank everyone for all their love, kindness and support now and throughout Michael's life. It was that love and kindness that made him the marvellous person he was. Michael was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend."
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers associated with water sports, even for experienced individuals. The emergency services involved typically include the Coastguard, RNLI, and police, who coordinate efforts in such challenging conditions.
