The Environment Agency has taken decisive action against the operators of Seaton Meadows landfill site in Seaton Carew, serving a suspension notice due to excessive waste deposition. According to the agency, recent surveys identified areas of the site with too much waste, prompting the decision to suspend the operator's permit.
The suspension notice, served on July 10, requires the operator, SMLF Ltd, to comply with agreed tipping levels as outlined in its environmental permit. Checks so far suggest the suspension notice is being observed, with the Environment Agency continuing to monitor the situation.
Environment Agency Area Environment Manager Gary Wallace stated, 'We understand the community concerns about this site and we've taken decisive action to suspend the permit to prevent any more waste from being deposited.' He added that the agency is committed to ensuring the landfill is completed appropriately and safely, and will take further action if necessary.
Residents may still see material being moved around the site as the operator completes work to comply with the notice, but they should not see any further waste being brought on to the site. The operator has two months to appeal the suspension decision through the Planning Inspectorate, although the requirements of the suspension notice must still be carried out until the Planning Inspector makes its appeal decision.
The suspension of the landfill site may have implications for local businesses and households that rely on waste disposal services. While the immediate impact on the UK economy may be limited, the Environment Agency's actions demonstrate its commitment to protecting the environment and public health.
