Sellafield identifies partners for £3.6 billion asset care framework

Sellafield Ltd has identified partners for its new Project and Asset Care Execution (PACE) framework, valued at up to £3.6 billion.

  • The PACE framework will deliver asset care and asset creation activities at Sellafield.
  • The framework is set to run for an initial 9 years, with an option for a further 6 years, extending to 2041.
  • Identified partners include OneAxIoM (a joint venture between Amentum Clean Energy Limited and Mitie Ltd) and HOCHTIEF Infrastructure UK.

Sellafield Ltd has named the successful partners for its new Project and Asset Care Execution (PACE) framework, which has a value of up to £3.6 billion. This framework is designed to deliver asset care and asset creation activities at the Sellafield site, encompassing tasks from smaller asset care to larger, more complex projects.

Subject to the formal award, OneAxIoM, a joint venture between Amentum Clean Energy Limited and Mitie Ltd, has been identified for Lot 1. This lot will support process and mechanical handling nuclear facilities across Spent Fuel Management and Retrievals East River. HOCHTIEF Infrastructure UK has been identified for Lot 2, which will support batch specialist and decommissioning nuclear facilities across Special Nuclear Materials, nuclear infrastructure, and remediation.

The PACE framework aims to improve value for money by fostering long-term supply chain partnerships, promoting innovation, skills, and sustainability. It will also support the Sellafield Social Impact, Multiplied (SIX) strategy, which includes investing in apprenticeships, skills, and local employment opportunities, and maximising small and medium enterprise (SME) involvement.

Off-site delivery will be a key component of PACE, utilising modern methods of construction for building, inspecting, and preparing assets before installation. An existing facility in Egremont, West Cumbria, will be refurbished for Lot 1, while new off-site locations are being considered for Lot 2 to support efficient delivery and create local job and business opportunities.

The frameworks are planned to run for an initial 9 years, with an option for an additional 6 years, potentially extending through to 2041. Mobilisation will commence once the contract is formally signed.

Why this matters: The framework is a major part of Sellafield Ltd’s overarching acquisition strategy and aims to strengthen asset care capability to ensure assets remain safe, reliable, and fit for the future.
