School leavers with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Coventry recently experienced a revolutionary "sensory prom" – an inclusive farewell to their school days that sets a new standard for inclusivity. Organised by Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind (CWWMind), this trailblazing event is believed to be the first of its kind in the city.
Held at the 147 club in Coventry on 30th June, the prom was meticulously tailored to address the specific needs of attendees. In contrast to traditional proms that can be overwhelming for some, organisers implemented several adaptations, including lower music volumes, separate quiet rooms and a silent disco option – ensuring every pupil felt comfortable participating.
By walking a delicate balance between sensory considerations and celebratory fun, CWWMind created an environment where SEND pupils could let their hair down. Photo booths and discos still made an appearance, but with thoughtful adjustments to accommodate those who require extra support.
The success of the initiative is clear in the glowing feedback from parents. Kate, whose 15-year-old daughter Lillie-Mae from Warwickshire attended, said it was "the perfect end" to her school career – and praised the quiet rooms for allowing her child to participate fully in the celebration.
This pioneering event sends a powerful message: that every young person deserves an inclusive social experience, regardless of their needs. By adapting traditional milestones with sensitivity and creativity, CWWMind has shown schools and communities how to create a more welcoming environment for all students.
