A new guide has named seven of the most beautiful downtowns in America, all of which are highly walkable.
Charleston, South Carolina, is described as a living museum, with more than 2,500 historic buildings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. Savannah, Georgia, has a grid plan dating back to 1733 with 22 park-like squares. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is noted for its strict architectural code that ensures adobe-style flat roofs and earthy tones.
Other downtowns on the list include Madison, Wisconsin, set on an isthmus between two lakes; Providence, Rhode Island, with a European feel; and leafy destinations in Idaho and Virginia.
