Several athletes who competed in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have reportedly not returned home with their teams. Police Scotland confirmed it has received reports of various athletes being "unaccounted for" since the Games concluded on Sunday.
Among those reported missing are four members of the Ugandan boxing squad, identified by local media as Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Kemis, and Emily Nakalema. NBS Sport reported that one of these boxers stated an intention to seek asylum in Scotland, believing the country offers better training facilities and opportunities than their homeland.
Pakistan Today also reported that boxer Qudratullah did not join his teammates for the flight home to Pakistan and was not found in his room by officials. Police Scotland stated that inquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, with early engagement taking place with the Home Office.
A Glasgow 2026 spokeswoman, Sophie Ashcroft, said the organisers are working with partners including Police Scotland, Border Force, and UK Visas & Immigration to ensure a safe conclusion to the Games.
