Severn Trent, a major water supplier to over eight million people across England and Wales, including 4.8 million homes and businesses in the Midlands, has announced it recorded its highest ever level of water demand in recent days. The company reported usage reached almost 2.4 billion litres, marking an increase of approximately 400 million litres daily above typical levels. This unprecedented surge in demand has surpassed previous peaks experienced during the 2022 drought and the Covid-19 pandemic.
The significant increase in water consumption is largely attributed to the ongoing hot weather, marking the second heatwave of the summer. Severn Trent noted that demand has been 'significantly higher' than normal, extending for longer periods each day and into the night. Activities such as watering gardens and filling paddling pools are believed to be major contributors to this elevated usage, placing considerable strain on the water network.
In response to the record demand, Severn Trent's teams are working tirelessly around the clock, increasing water treatment, managing supplies across their service region, and fixing leaks at an accelerated rate. However, the company is also appealing to its customers for assistance. A spokesperson emphasised the need for public cooperation to help maintain water flow, especially with no rainfall currently forecast.
While no water restrictions are presently in place, Severn Trent aims to keep it that way and is encouraging customers to adopt simple water-saving measures. These suggestions include opting for a watering can instead of a sprinkler, allowing lawns to recover naturally from dry conditions, reusing water from paddling pools for plants, and ensuring washing machines and dishwashers are run with full loads. These small adjustments, the company believes, can collectively make a substantial difference.
