Shamrock Rovers centre-back Lee Grace has spoken of his immense pride and excitement as his long-standing defensive partner and friend, Roberto 'Pico' Lopes, prepares to represent Cape Verde at the World Cup. Despite the Republic of Ireland's failure to qualify for the tournament, Grace will have a vested interest in the finals, cheering on his club captain on the global stage.
Lopes, 33, who was born in Dublin to a Cape Verdean father and Irish mother, is set to feature for Cape Verde in their inaugural World Cup appearance. The nation will be one of the smallest ever to participate in the prestigious tournament. Grace and Lopes have formed a formidable defensive partnership at Shamrock Rovers, contributing significantly to the Dublin club's sustained success, which includes five Premier Division titles and two FAI Cups, alongside two campaigns in the UEFA Conference League.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Grace highlighted Lopes' qualities, stating, "He's an absolutely brilliant player. He's a leader, he was always a leader before he was named captain of the club. He sets the standard the way he trains, gives his life to football, so to see him get the rewards is very pleasing for all of us." Grace further added that Lopes has continuously improved since joining the club, becoming one of the best defenders in the League of Ireland.
Lopes received a heartfelt send-off from his native Crumlin suburb and from Shamrock Rovers fans during his final club game before departing for the World Cup. Grace believes that the support for Lopes will extend beyond Tallaght, with the entire League of Ireland and the wider Irish public rallying behind him. "It's unbelievable. That's everyone's dream to play for your country at the World Cup," Grace remarked, acknowledging Lopes' pride in representing his father's homeland.
Cape Verde has been drawn into Group H, where they will face formidable opponents. Their campaign begins against 2010 champions Spain on 15th June at 17:00 BST. They will then take on Uruguay on 21st June at 22:00 BST, concluding their group stage fixtures against Saudi Arabia on 27th June at 01:00 BST. Grace confirmed his plans to adjust his sleep schedule to watch the matches, particularly the earlier kick-offs, stating, "Whatever happens, win, lose or draw he's playing on the biggest stage and living out a dream."
Lopes made his debut for Cape Verde in 2019, having previously represented the Republic of Ireland Under-19s in 2011. His journey from the League of Ireland to the World Cup stage is a testament to his dedication and talent, garnering widespread admiration across Irish football.
