Families in financial need will breathe a sigh of relief as Sheffield City Council launches an innovative scheme to combat school holiday boredom, providing free sports activities and food across the city's parks from July 20th to August 28th. The initiative is specifically designed to target households struggling to afford recreational options.
Over a dozen locations, including Firth Park, Greenhill Park, and Gleadless Common, will host two-hour sessions in the afternoons and evenings, featuring football, rounders, and family-friendly games suitable for all ages and abilities. Expert coaches will be on hand to guide participants, offering opportunities to try new sports or enjoy familiar ones.
The programme is delivered by Everyone Active, an organisation contracted by Sheffield City Council to manage numerous leisure, health, and wellbeing facilities across the city. Prominent venues like the English Institute of Sport, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, and Ice Sheffield will also offer free food and drink at each session.
Lorenzo Clark from Everyone Active highlighted the scheme's purpose, stating it provides activities for those who might not be able to afford a holiday. Councillor Brian Holmshaw acknowledged the challenge parents often face in entertaining children during the long summer break, expressing hope that these activities would encourage families to get outdoors, be active, and have fun.
While the events are free to attend, families are advised to book their places in advance to ensure participation. This widespread offering represents a significant effort to enhance community wellbeing and provide accessible summer entertainment for Sheffield residents.
