Sheikh Tahnoon, the younger brother of the UAE's ruler Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, combines his role as the emirates' top money man and dealmaker with a position as head of national security. He runs the UAE's largest sovereign wealth fund and First Abu Dhabi Bank, and presides over an economic empire worth roughly $1.5 trillion.
His AI and cybersecurity company G42 has positioned itself at the heart of the global AI establishment. Microsoft has invested $1.5 billion and its vice-chair, Brad Smith, now has a seat on the G42 board. G42 is either a direct investor in or a major partner of Anthropic and OpenAI.
Donald Trump reversed a decision to restrict the export of AI chips to the UAE, paving the way for the construction of the biggest data centre in the world in a campus outside Abu Dhabi. Dubbed Stargate UAE, the completed facility will have a 5GW power capacity, up to five times the size of today's largest hyperscale data centres.
In the UK, Sheikh Tahnoon oversees healthcare providers and property giants and manages investments in public utilities such as Thames Water. This summer, his investment conglomerate IHC bought a controlling stake in Richard Caring's Ivy hospitality empire.
