As flash floods threaten homes and livelihoods in West Yorkshire, a pioneering river restoration project has just reached a major milestone: completing the first phase of vital work on Shipley's Northcliffe Dike. This crucial initiative is part of the 'Better Becks' partnership, backed by significant funding from the Environment Agency and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The innovative approach employs Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques to slow water flow and prevent sediment buildup. Volunteers and staff from the Aire Rivers Trust have been busy constructing leaky dams, removing invasive plant species, and strategically placing woody material across hillsides and side gullies to divert excess water during peak flows.

Northcliffe Dike feeds into Bradford Beck, notorious for its rapid response to rainfall. This can lead to devastating floods downstream, putting homes and businesses at risk. By slowing the flow of water using natural barriers, the project aims to mitigate this risk and protect local communities. Ineke Jackson, Project Manager at the Environment Agency, welcomed the work, saying it will enable the beck to flow more naturally, thereby increasing flood resilience.

The project's biodiversity benefits are equally impressive, with significant strides made in removing invasive non-native species (INNS) like Gaultheria shallon and regenerating native beech saplings. This will increase light penetration and create open woodland areas essential for native flora to thrive. An eroded footpath was also repaired, complete with drainage grips installed to further slow water flow.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, hailed the project as a vital investment in protecting homes and businesses while boosting wildlife and creating a greener region.
