The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has today, 28 August 2026, launched a public consultation regarding proposed changes to the qualifications and prerequisites required for a security licence. These proposals follow industry engagement and a strategic review conducted this year.
Key proposals include updated specifications for training content and new methods for assessing English language proficiency. This may involve requiring an additional independent test to enhance confidence in communication skills. The SIA is also considering changes to how learners demonstrate first aid competence, potentially introducing a new security-specific first aid qualification.
The consultation also addresses first aid as a potential licence condition for close protection operatives, door supervisors, and security guards. Furthermore, changes to conflict management skills specifications are proposed, including more real-life scenarios, and a new post-licence standard in advanced physical intervention skills is being considered.
Views are also sought on broader changes to qualification content, such as recording incidents, crime scene preservation, and updates related to Martyn’s Law and drug use. The consultation will close on Friday 23 October 2026, with final specifications expected in winter 2026 and new qualifications launching later in 2027.
