Silverstone, the historic home of British motorsport, has been confirmed as a host venue for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027. The six-hour race will be a significant addition to the global endurance racing calendar, scheduled as the third event of the season from 23-25 April. This announcement sees the championship return to the Northamptonshire circuit after an absence since 2019, much to the anticipation of British motorsport enthusiasts.
The WEC has experienced a notable resurgence in recent years, largely attributed to the introduction of its new 'hypercar' class in 2021. This top-tier category has attracted major manufacturers, including Ferrari, Peugeot, Alpine, BMW, Toyota, Genesis, Cadillac, and Aston Martin, all vying for supremacy. The return of Silverstone to the calendar underscores the circuit's standing in international motorsport and its appeal to both drivers and fans, who appreciate its challenging 5.891km layout known for its fast, sweeping corners. The event will also feature the showroom-style LMGT3 cars, adding another dimension to the racing spectacle.
Frederic Lequien, CEO of WEC, expressed enthusiasm for Silverstone's reintroduction, citing the venue's rich motorsport history and its successful legacy of hosting endurance racing. He highlighted the circuit's appeal to competitors as a formidable challenge and praised the famously enthusiastic and knowledgeable British fanbase. The WEC calendar for 2027 will comprise nine events, starting in Qatar (Lusail) and also visiting Italy (Imola), Belgium (Spa), Le Mans, Brazil (Sao Paulo), the United States (Circuit of the Americas), Japan (Fuji), and Bahrain (Sakhir).
The championship's growing popularity is evident in events like the Le Mans 24 Hours, which consistently sells out, attracting around 300,000 spectators annually. Other races, such as the Six Hours of Spa, are also seeing increased attendance. The WEC features a strong driver line-up, including several former Formula 1 drivers, such as Robert Kubica, who was part of last year's Le Mans-winning team. The series is set to become even more competitive with the confirmed entry of Ford and McLaren into the hypercar category next year, with Ford rekindling its historic rivalry with Ferrari.
The decision to bring the WEC back to Silverstone is expected to provide a significant boost to the British motorsport scene. It offers UK fans a prime opportunity to witness world-class endurance racing on home soil, showcasing cutting-edge automotive technology and intense competition. The event's timing in late April also positions it early in the European motorsport season, potentially attracting a large audience.
