The potential deal would see SK hynix take over facilities initially earmarked for advanced chip packaging, repurposing them to establish a robust memory chip production footprint within the United States.
This strategic move underscores a broader industry trend towards diversifying global semiconductor supply chains and increasing domestic manufacturing capabilities, particularly in critical sectors like memory. The US government has been actively incentivising such investments through initiatives like the CHIPS and Science Act, aiming to reduce reliance on overseas production and enhance national security in technology.
For SK hynix, a leading global producer of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and NAND flash memory, establishing a US manufacturing base would mitigate geopolitical risks and potentially gain access to significant government subsidies.
