Skydance merger to close Tuesday after $110 billion deal approved

Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, forming Skydance, is set to close on Tuesday following judicial approval of the $110 billion deal.

  • The $110 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery was approved by U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín last week.
  • The new combined entertainment company will be named Skydance and led by David Ellison.
  • John Oliver's contract for Last Week Tonight was recently renewed through 2027.

Paramount is set to complete its acquisition of HBO's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, on Tuesday. The $110 billion deal, which will form a new entertainment company named Skydance, received approval last week from U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín.

David Ellison will lead Skydance. The merger had faced delays for months due to antitrust concerns.

Concerns have been raised that Ellison may implement significant job cuts and changes to Warner Bros. properties, including CNN and HBO. This follows previous actions at CBS News and Paramount's decision to cancel Stephen Colbert's The Late Show last year.

John Oliver, whose contract for Last Week Tonight was recently renewed through 2027, did not address the merger on Sunday's episode of his show, despite having publicly criticised the potential deal in 2025.

Why this matters: The merger could lead to significant changes and job cuts across Warner Bros. properties, including CNN and HBO.
