Electric vehicle (EV) startup Slate Auto, known for its emphasis on simplicity and customisation, has unveiled an unusual partnership with the iconic crayon brand Crayola. The collaboration will see Slate offer five vehicle wraps featuring signature Crayola colours, bringing a playful and vibrant aesthetic to its unpainted grey electric truck.
Owners of Slate's EV truck will now have the option to adorn their vehicles in hues such as Cerulean, Fern, Jersey Tomato, Razzmatazz, and Dandelion. These vinyl wraps, which are applied directly to the vehicle without the need for painting, are a core element of Slate's customisation strategy. Each Crayola-themed wrap is priced at $1,549.99 and includes a matching Crayola key fob and a 'Slatelet' – a custom art piece designed to snap onto the dashboard.
This venture marks Crayola's inaugural foray into the automotive sector, according to Anna Roca, head of global partnerships at Crayola. While Slate Auto has engaged in other collaborations, including one with NYC artist Max Kolo, the Crayola partnership is anticipated to be particularly recognisable and appeal to a broad audience.
Slate Auto, backed by Jeff Bezos, emerged from 'stealth mode' in April 2025. The company has built its business model around providing a basic electric truck with a 205-mile range for $24,950, allowing buyers to then personalise it through various accessories and wraps. Last month, Slate revealed its base price and began taking pre-orders for the vehicle, which starts as a two-seat truck and can be converted into a five-seater SUV for $29,950. The company has yet to make its first customer deliveries.
While Slate has not disclosed further potential partnerships, a company spokesperson indicated an openness to collaborating with more 'Makers, creators, and partners' in the future. Given Slate's custom-centric approach, it is highly probable that more design collaborations will be announced as the company moves towards its delivery phase, further expanding the customisation options available to its customers.
