Small food businesses show strong commitment to safety despite pressures

New research indicates that small and micro food businesses in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland maintain a strong commitment to food safety, despite ongoing economic challenges.

  • Nine in ten small and micro food businesses trust the FSA to maintain and improve food safety standards.
  • 98% of businesses selling food as a meal, takeaway, or packaged at point of sale provide allergen information.
  • Two-thirds of businesses expressed concern about changes in customer behaviour due to the cost-of-living situation.

Small and micro food businesses across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are demonstrating a strong commitment to food safety, according to the latest Small and Micro Food Business Operators (FBOs) Tracking Survey published today. The report highlights that trust in the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) core mission remains high.

Among businesses aware of the FSA, 91% stated they trust the agency to maintain and improve food safety standards. Additionally, 98% of businesses that sell food as a meal, takeaway, or packaged at the point of sale confirmed they provide allergen information to customers.

Despite these positive findings, the survey also points to a challenging operating environment. Two-thirds (67%) of businesses cited changes in customer behaviour linked to the cost-of-living situation as a concern. Pressures from inflation, energy costs, and recruitment also remained significant, though slightly reduced compared to 2023.

Professor Rick Mumford, Deputy Director of Science and Research at the FSA, acknowledged the decline in some confidence measures, stating the FSA will focus on improving its engagement and communications with small and micro businesses.
