Companies that market medicines for small pet animals, which are exempt from the requirements of a Marketing Authorisation (MA) under Schedule 6 of the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR), are required to submit an annual list of their currently marketed products to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD).
This annual return must be submitted by 30 November 2026. The VMD states that this process helps ensure continued compliance with regulatory requirements for these specific medicines.
The exemption applies to medicines for various small pet species, including aquarium animals, cage birds, homing pigeons, terrarium animals, small rodents, ferrets, and rabbits. Medicines for chickens, ducks, and turkeys are not covered by this exemption as they are classified as food-producing animals.
The VMD also reiterated that all companies marketing exempt medicines must apply for registration with the VMD at least two months before marketing any previously unregistered products.
