A small power plant was shut down in July after a cyber attack, according to government statements. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has since contacted power companies to advise them on cyber attack risks.
The government confirmed that at no point was there a risk to the UK's wider energy system. The affected site was a small-scale generator and not an essential service like a large power station.
The Daily Telegraph reported that the attack, which caused the plant to shut down for four days, was carried out by hackers affiliated with the Iranian regime. Neither the government nor the National Cyber Security Centre provided further details on the specific site for security reasons.
The government is currently updating cyber security regulations and developing a new energy resilience strategy, expected later this year.
