It's been 20 years since Snow Patrol unleashed their iconic hit 'Chasing Cars' upon the world, and the Northern Irish band are still reeling from its seismic impact. Written in a laid-back session that was initially meant for other artists, the song's humble beginnings belied its global phenomenon status – with over two billion streams to its name.
For frontman Gary Lightbody, the magic of 'Chasing Cars' lies in its organic creation. "We didn't feel like we were writing a single," he recalls. "It was more like a conversation that just flowed." That effortless vibe is palpable in the song's evocative title, which stems from a wry observation by Lightbody's father – comparing his son's romantic pursuits to 'a dog chasing a car'.
Despite its simplicity, 'Chasing Cars' took months of tinkering to perfect. Lightbody reveals that even the lyrics underwent significant revisions from their early drafts. And yet, it was the song's slow-burning rise to fame that ultimately cemented its place in UK music history – peaking at number six on the singles chart and going on to sell a staggering 1.2 million copies.
The band's plans to mark this milestone are nothing short of spectacular: two special performances at the Royal Albert Hall, where they'll play the 'Eyes Open' album in its entirety alongside fan favourites. It's a fitting tribute to a song that has become synonymous with romance and heartbreak – and a testament to Snow Patrol's enduring appeal.
It's been a tumultuous few years for the band, though. Drummer Jonny Quinn and bassist Paul Wilson departed in 2023, leaving Lightbody, guitarist Nathan Connolly, and multi-instrumentalist Jonny McDaid to navigate treacherous creative waters. But with producer Fraser T Smith at the helm, they found a new lease on life – culminating in their critically acclaimed 2024 album 'The Forest is the Path'.
And if that wasn't enough, Snow Patrol have also been cooking up something special with Aussie pop icon Kylie Minogue. Their collaboration, 'The Fireside', is more of a 'non-duet' than a traditional partnership – with Minogue's voice adding a subtle yet unmistakable texture to the track. It's just one more chapter in an incredible story that shows no signs of slowing down.
