The mounting pressure of rising horse care costs has led to a significant surge in demand for affordable livery services across the UK. Data from Padwick Farm in Leek, Staffordshire, reveals an exponential 60% increase in bookings for retirement livery over the past five years, underscoring the escalating financial burden on horse owners.
The cost of keeping a horse can be substantial, with estimated typical livery fees covering boarding and care reaching £800 per month, according to the charity Horse Trust. In contrast, facilities like Padwick Farm are offering services at less than half this price, aiming to provide a lifeline for owners struggling to meet these expenses. Fiona Long highlighted the stark reality some owners face, recounting an instance where a family considered euthanising their horse due to an inability to afford its care, while also struggling to provide for their children.
A study by the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) revealed that over 80% of equine owners are worried about the continuous pressure of rising costs. Disturbingly, 5% of these owners are contemplating euthanasia for their horses, citing an inability to afford essential services such as farrier visits and regular veterinary call-outs.
Long noted a dramatic increase in hay prices, with a large bale costing £90 today compared to £10 approximately 30 years ago. Livery costs, which remained relatively stable for two decades, have also begun to rise significantly in the last two years. For owners like the Longs, offering more affordable options is a way to "give back" to the animals, ensuring they can live out their years even after they are no longer ridden.
The British Horse Society estimates that direct costs for caring for one horse amount to approximately £5,350 annually. To help mitigate these expenses, they recommend several financial tips, including enrolling in healthcare plans to spread the cost of routine treatments, discussing shoeing alternatives with a farrier, and utilising small-holed haynets or slow feeders to reduce waste.
