Social Housing Fire Safety: 2,078 Buildings Have Life-Critical Defects

The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) has reported that 2,078 social housing buildings over 11 metres in England have life-critical fire safety defects related to their external wall systems.
- Out of 17,258 relevant buildings reported, 2,078 have life-critical fire safety defects.
- Remediation works are expected to be completed within the next five years for 1,593 of these buildings.
- Since June 2017, 811 buildings with identified defects have been remediated or are awaiting assessment.
The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) has published its latest survey findings on the fire safety of social housing buildings in England that are 11 metres or taller. The survey identified 2,078 buildings with life-critical fire safety defects in their external wall systems, out of 17,258 relevant buildings reported.
Most of these buildings, 1,593 (76.7%), are expected to have remediation works completed within the next five years. An additional 139 buildings (6.7%) have completed remediation works and are awaiting confirmation from a building works assessment.
Will Perry, Director of Strategy at RSH, stated that landlords are making progress but that work must continue at pace to address dangerous cladding and other fire safety defects. He added that RSH expects boards and councillors to ensure risks are effectively managed and remediation plans are delivered promptly.
