Solar roof tiles, which integrate solar cells into roofing materials, have struggled to gain traction compared to traditional solar panels. This is partly due to their higher cost and lower efficiency.
A solar roof system can cost twice as much as a standard solar panel setup before factoring in repair expenses. Repairing solar shingles is also more complex and costly, as they lack the individual panel monitoring found in traditional systems.
Efficiency is another challenge, with solar tiles being less efficient due to their smaller size and reduced airflow, which leads to heat loss. Coloured tiles are even less efficient, as black is the optimal colour for absorbing solar energy.
Installation of solar roofs is also more complex, often requiring collaboration between roofers, solar installers, and electricians, alongside more intricate building regulations. This can lead to increased time and paperwork for roofing businesses.
However, advancements like matrix shingling technology could offer a future opportunity. This method connects solar cells in narrow strips, allowing current to bypass shaded areas and improving both energy output and appearance.
