Sonay Kartal has reached the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open, securing one of the best victories of her career by defeating world No 6 Elina Svitolina. The 24-year-old triumphed with a 6-2 2-6 6-4 win.
Kartal, currently ranked 170, is playing in only her second WTA tournament since March, having been out for six months with a back injury. Her achievement marks her first WTA 1000 semi-final and makes her the lowest-ranked player to reach this stage at the Wuhan Open since its inception in 2014.
Her run in China means Kartal will re-enter the world's top 100 after her ranking fell during her injury absence. She is scheduled to face former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-finals on Saturday.
