The body of Carl Sampson, believed to have died approximately six years earlier, was discovered in a Rotherham home on 21 March. His remains were found after a neighbour saw his mother, Ann Sampson, 73, lying on the living room floor, an inquest at Doncaster Coroner's Court heard.
Police found evidence of an electrical fire downstairs at the property in Treeton Crescent. Carl Sampson, who had been in his 50s and had Huntington's disease, was found upstairs.
A pathologist determined Ann Sampson died from breathing in smoke, with a secondary condition of heart disease. However, the cause of her son's death could not be ascertained due to the advanced state of decomposition.
Carl Sampson's son, Ethan, stated he last saw his father in 2019 and his grandmother in 2021. He added that his grandmother, who had not spoken to him for a few years, was his father's carer and protector.
The inquest was told that Carl Sampson's former partner, Lisa Gilbank, contacted Rotherham Council's social services in 2021 with welfare concerns, but was informed no further action was deemed necessary. Carl Sampson had not been in contact with his GP since 2007 and was not claiming benefits.
Assistant Coroner Simon Tai recorded Ann Sampson's death as accidental and an open conclusion for Carl Sampson's death.
