Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed it will cease the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles from January 2028. This pivotal decision signals a complete embrace of an all-digital distribution model for future game releases, which will be sold exclusively through the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers. Games launched prior to this cutoff date will, for now, continue to be available in disc format.
The move, announced by Sony this week, is a direct response to evolving consumer behaviour. The company stated that the general preference for digital media now significantly outweighs physical discs, a trend reflected in its latest financial results. For the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, digital downloads constituted 85% of full-game software sales across PS4 and PS5, with physical copies making up the remaining 15%.
While the transition marks a significant moment for gamers, particularly those who value collecting physical editions, Sony views it as a natural progression. The company highlighted that this shift will enable it to align more closely with how the majority of its community currently accesses and plays games. This sentiment was echoed in recent discussions surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, where the revelation that its 'physical' edition would only contain a download code sparked debate among players who still favour tangible game copies.
The broader retail landscape has also been influenced by this trend. Stores traditionally reliant on physical game sales have reportedly experienced significant contractions, with some outlets, such as GameStop, closing numerous locations over the past two fiscal years as more consumers opt for online purchases. This indicates a wider industry movement away from physical media.
In a related development, Sony also announced the impending closure of the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 in selected markets later this year, with global closures for both the PS3 and PlayStation Vita stores scheduled for next year. Once these stores are deactivated, players will no longer be able to purchase new digital content for these older systems. However, Sony has assured that previously purchased games and content will remain available for download for the foreseeable future.
