British actress Sophie Thatcher has revealed she is eager to move on from her breakout role as the teenage Natalie Scatorccio in the popular survival thriller series 'Yellowjackets'. The 25-year-old, whose performance in the Paramount+ show brought her widespread recognition, admitted that portraying the same character over an extended period has left her feeling somewhat 'stunted'.
Speaking to Variety this week, Thatcher confirmed she had only three days of filming remaining for the show's fourth and final season. "And then I'm free," she reportedly exclaimed, indicating her readiness for new challenges. While her comments were not intended as a criticism of the show's writing, she explained that repeatedly returning to a younger mindset for the character had become less stimulating.
Thatcher elaborated on her feelings, stating, "I personally feel a bit stunted having to play the same character." She described how quickly she could access intense emotions like screaming and crying for scenes, suggesting it felt less challenging now. She also highlighted the confusion of maintaining a performance level from when she first filmed the pilot seven years ago, wanting to grow as an actor rather than continually revisit a past version of herself.
'Yellowjackets', created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, captivated audiences by following the members of a girls' high-school football team through two distinct timelines: their harrowing 19 months stranded in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash in 1996, and the complicated lives of the adult survivors decades later. Thatcher portrays the younger Natalie, with Juliette Lewis playing her adult counterpart.
The show's creators announced last October that the fourth season would provide a "twisted conclusion" to the story. They explained that they felt the narrative had reached a natural end point, and it was their responsibility to honour that. While the final season is currently in production, a release date has not yet been announced.
Thatcher's current perspective marks a shift from her earlier comments in 2023, when she told NME that playing Natalie had initially "felt very natural." Even then, however, she expressed a conscious desire to seek out roles vastly different from Natalie, aiming to demonstrate her versatility as a 'chameleon' and character actor. Her latest venture includes starring as Elle in Nicolas Winding Refn's new film 'Her Private Hell', a role that clearly signals her ambition to explore new artistic territories.
