SpaceX has significantly increased its purchases of Tesla Megapacks, spending $329 million on the battery storage devices this year. This includes $295 million spent in the second quarter alone, according to the company's earnings report released on Tuesday.
These industrial-scale batteries are likely being deployed at SpaceX's xAI data centres. Before xAI merged with SpaceX, the AI company had previously acquired $430 million worth of Megapacks for its data centres.
Batteries like the Megapack are crucial for data centres, providing backup power and helping to manage fluctuating power demands from training AI models. They can smooth out power peaks, which may lower costs and ensure consistent operation.
