Spain's coalition government has approved new housing measures today, 29 September 2026, in response to protests over the country's housing crisis. Health Minister Mónica García stated that the proposals include a potential ban on evictions until 2030.
Other measures agreed upon include the rolling over of tenant contracts until 2028, stricter regulation of short-term and room rentals, and a ban on investment firms purchasing housing. García said these measures aim to intervene in the speculative housing market.
The new housing measures must be approved in parliament, where the leftist coalition government lacks a majority. The minority government, comprising the Socialists and Sumar, has 30 days from the decree's publication to reach a parliamentary agreement.
The announcement follows protests sparked by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid. Her lawyer stated on Monday that she would be allowed to return to her home after a deal was reached with the property owner.
