Spanish startup Liux has secured Europe-wide homologation for its Liux Big microcar. The company anticipates starting sales of the vehicle in the first half of next year.

Liux aims to compete in the microcar market by focusing on sustainability. The Liux Big's fiber body is made from a novel linen-based biocomposite, designed to allow the material to be extracted and recycled. The company also states that the car is intended to be easy to maintain and avoid rapid obsolescence cycles.

The Liux Big is expected to be priced below €18,000 before potential EV subsidies. Liux co-founder Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros noted that the company has concluded a fully sovereign supply chain is unattainable, but sustainability remains a core priority.

Liux has grown to 65 employees and is preparing to ramp up production across three facilities in Spain. Its factory in Azuqueca de Henares, near Madrid, follows "lean management" principles and performs the final steps of production. Liux states its production capacity could reach 20,000 cars a year by 2030.

More than 7,500 people have joined a waiting list for the Liux Big. The most common profile among prospective buyers is a 55- to 60-year-old city dweller, with Liux assuming the vehicle will often be a household's second car.

Why this matters: The introduction of the Liux Big offers a new, sustainably-focused option in the growing European microcar market, which has seen increasing competition from small electric vehicles.

What this means for you: If you are considering a microcar, the Liux Big could offer a new option with a focus on sustainable materials and design, potentially serving as a second household vehicle.
