Spotify introduces new running mode for Premium iOS users in select countries

Spotify has launched a new running mode within its phone app, available to Premium subscribers on iOS in several countries, including the UK.

  • The new mode selects songs based on run phases, user preferences, and tempo.
  • It offers 25 presets and allows customisation of workout type, duration, BPM, and music genre.
  • The feature also provides audio cues for run stages, currently in English only.

Spotify has added a new running mode to its phone application, designed for users who listen to music while running. The mode will curate songs according to different phases of a run, selecting tracks based on user preferences and tempo.

Premium subscribers using iOS in countries including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden can access the running mode from the Fitness Hub. Users can choose from 25 presets and customise workout types, duration, beats per minute, and music genre. The mode also includes audio cues for different stages of a run, which are currently available only in English.

This new feature leverages AI capabilities that Spotify has been testing for prompted playlists over the past year. The streaming platform noted that many users were already creating playlists for fitness and workout activities, which inspired the development of this running mode. The launch follows Spotify's earlier introduction of fitness content with Peloton and comes a couple of months after Strava removed Spotify integration from its Record feature.

What this means for you: If you are a Spotify Premium user on iOS in the UK, you can now access a new running mode in the app.
