St Helens, the record 10-time Super League champions, are set to miss the playoffs for the first time in over 60 years. This follows a recent defeat against Hull FC, which leaves them four points behind the top six with five rounds of the season remaining.
The club's decline has been ongoing since winning four titles consecutively between 2019 and 2022 and the World Club Challenge in 2023. This year, former Salford coach Paul Rowley was sacked last month after eight months in charge, having been brought in over the winter.
New chief executive Abi Ekoku, who has been in the role for a few months, is tasked with finding a new head coach. The club is reportedly considering an assistant coach from Australia. St Helens has also posted annual losses of more than £3m.
