A petition advocating for a landmark celebrating the fictional character Ali G in Staines has been rejected by Spelthorne Borough Council councillors.
The petition was launched by residents in light of an upcoming new film featuring Ali G. Alex Balkan, who initiated the petition, stated that the attraction would have provided a "big economic benefit" to the area, increasing footfall in the High Street.
Following a debate on Tuesday, councillors decided not to support the proposal, according to a Spelthorne Borough Council spokesperson. The council cited a "need to focus on other priorities - particularly protecting and delivering essential local services and preparing for the ongoing local government reorganisation."
Ali G, a satirical character, first appeared in 1998. The 2002 film "Ali G Indahouse" brought international attention to Staines, though some residents reportedly felt it created a negative impression of the town. Staines changed its name to Staines-upon-Thames 14 years ago, reportedly to distance itself from negative associations with the character.
